Delayed Stress Reaction
I’ve been following some of the reporting about the ongoing health care debate. You’d think the citizens of this country would grab onto the opportunity to discuss the future of this very important part of their lives. Instead what I keep reading about is how people are scared to death of their government. The reaction seems all out of proportion to the threat. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not happy with the trail of destruction left by the Bush administration. An illegal and immoral war in Iraq, the further enrichment of the already fabulously wealthy at the expense of the working class, corporate welfare on steroids, disregard for the environment, active attacks on our constitutional liberties and the wholesale trashing of the economy to name a few. Given the mess is it any wonder GM and the Mega Banks required a bailout? Also is it any wonder that the average Joe is incensed about these things? Like the bumper sticker says “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.” So it appears that now we’re paying attention, it’s just that our time frame is a little off. In a nutshell, Obama is not Bush. The sooner we come to the collective understanding of that basic fact, the sooner we’ll have real reforms.
