Learning To Drive a Manual Transmission Car

If you need to learn how to drive a stick, you may be very apprehensive about learning. If you can drive a car with an automatic transmission, you can probably learn how to drive a stick shift pretty easily.

The key is practice. But practicing driving isn’t the key. If you can drive an automatic, the key to llearning to drive standard cars is learning how to clutch. Once you can feel the clutch engage, the rest is easy.

Have someone who knows how to drive a standard car find a safe place to park it for you. Then switch seats and practice by pressing the clutch all the way down, putting the stick shift in gear and bringing the clutch up slowly so that the car rocks a little bit. After the car rocks, depress the clutch all the way again.

Once you can rock the car without shutting the engine off you know how to clutch. If you already knew how to drive you are almost there. The rest is easy.
