Texas Company Pays Out for Pyramid Scheme
A multilevel marketing company in Texas has been told that it must repay over one million dollars worth of fees that were charged to residents in Texas to reach a settlement agreement that said the company was responsible for deceptive trade practices because they were apparently involved in an illegal pyramid scheme. The attorney general for the state said that the way a pyramid scheme usually works is that a member will pay for the opportunity to get profits in the future. Those payments are then used to give current members their profits.
The people who had joined most recently are then responsible for convincing other people to become a part of the company and in doing so create a larger base of people paying into the company. The reason a pyramid scheme is illegal is because the purpose of the company is not to actually sell a product but is to simply get other people to join the operation. This means that pyramid schemes are deceptive in their marketing practices.
A number of the types of advertisements that the average internet web surfer will see regarding working at home are types of pyramid schemes and are not actually legal, despite the fact that they often have very sophisticated seo company campaigns devised for their advertising. Unfortunately, many people who do not understand what a pyramid scheme is and will get caught up in them and end up having to pay a lot of money and not really get anything in return.
