Contracts for Difference or CFDs

My cousin watches the stock market and checks the prices every day.  I have never seen anyone so consumed with the changes in stock prices.  I thought it was somewhat weird until I started asking him what he was doing.  He explained he was analyzing stock prices and investing in CFDs or contracts for difference.  He never really purchased the stocks.  He went to a CFD broker and put up a portion of money to secure the contract, without out ever buying the stock.  He held it for so many days, watching the stocks every day, and when he figured it had gone up enough he closed the contract.
